The Arab American Scholarship Foundation of The Lebanese American Heritage Club

GENERAL CRITERIA

Below is the general criteria for scholarship applicants:

  1. Applicants must be of Arab descent.

  2. Undergraduate student applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Graduate student applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Senior High School Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Only High School Seniors can apply.

  3. Applicants must be maintaining full time status:

    1. Graduate students - 6 credits or more

    2. Undergraduate students - 12 credits or more

    3. Senior High School students - not applicable

  4. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and reside in the state of Michigan.

  5. Financial need will be considered.

  6. Special consideration will be given for applicants as follows:

    – Applicants majoring in Mass Communications and Political Science; other fields might also be specified by scholarship sponsors as a condition for awarding the scholarship

    –  Applicants enrolled or planning to enroll in universities that contribute towards the Arab American Scholarship Fund

    –   Applicants who did not receive a scholarship from the Arab American Foundation in the preceding year

  7. Relatives (members of immediate family) of the Executive Board members of the Lebanese-American Heritage Club are not eligible.

  8. Scholarship recipients will be required to volunteer for 6 hours of community service to support LAHC annual activities.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

All of the following documents must be postmarked and mailed before the deadline of April 6, 2008, for scholarship consideration. Please note that it is your responsibility to send the complete documentation required by the deadline indicated above.

1)   Completed application form: complete and submit the application form ONLINE. In addition to that, print the ONLINE form, sign it, and mail it with the other documents; please answer all questions.

2)   Official copies of academic transcripts: previous colleges for new transfer students. If you are a Graduate student, please send both your undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

3)   Two letters of recommendations. These should be from faculty members familiar with the student’s character and academic performance. Letters must be dated later than January of current year, and must be on letterhead of the institution.

4)   Copy of your current Student Aid Report (SAR). Please send a copy of all pages of the report, and the copy MUST include the “EFC” number (expected family contribution). The “EFC” number is an essential part of the scholarship selection process. To obtain the SAR with the “EFC”, you must submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the U.S. Department of Education. You can submit your application on the internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Submit your FAFSA as soon as possible so that you can receive your SAR in time to meet the deadline.

5)   A 500-word essay: describe how you can contribute to the well being of your community after you complete your education. You must sign your essay. Off-topics will cost points, so adhere to the subject of CONTRIBUTION to your community.
