The L.A.H.C. considers education to be one of its foremost
priorities, and Club members are proud to administer the Scholarships
Program every year. Since its establishment in 1989, this program has
substantially grown in number and total amount of
scholarships and Student Recognition Events. Starting in February of each year, the Club begins the search for recipients of $1,000 awards. Bulletins and releases are sent to a large number of higher education institutions, and applications are reviewed by a selection committee consisting of teachers, professors, and other members of the academic community. Selection is based on academic achievement, community activities, recommendations and financial need. The selection process is designed to ensure equal opportunity. Recognizing the need for diversity, the Club makes special efforts to identify and encourage deserving women candidates. In addition, the Club makes a special effort to attract students in the fields of journalism and communications, to help more Lebanese and Arab Americans achieve success in mainstream media. The scholarships are awarded at a public banquet to honor recipients. This gala usually hosts prestigious speakers, and is regularly attended by members of Michigan's Lebanese community, as well as leaders from Michigan's political, educational, and business communities. Needless to say, the program would not be a success without the continuous support of the community and its businesses providing donations throughout the year, and especially at the annual fundraising dinner. Please visit our 2003 Scholarship Ceremony page, our 2004 Scholarship Ceremony page, or our most recent, the 18th Annual Arab American Foundation Scholarship Ceremony held on May 18, 2006 that were held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dearborn Michigan. Furthermore, and each year, The L.A.H.C. holds a special VIP Luncheon at a local Middle school to recognize students of higher achievement. The VIP Student Recognition Luncheon treats high academic achieving students to a Pizza and Pop Luncheon, through which special recognition certificates are presented to the qualifying students. In addition, The L.A.H.C. is currently holding an art contest with three local area elementary and middle schools. Deadline for the art work (from various grade levels) is November 15th, 2003. Art work, submitted by students, will be displayed during the L.A.H.C. Lebanese Independence Day Celebration Dinner that will be held on November 21, 2003 at the Heritage Manor, Home of the L.A.H.C., located on Chase Road in Dearborn, Michigan. Winners will be announced at a later day, and will each receive a savings bond. Schools will receive an "Art Supplies" gift certificate. Further details will be announced and posted on our web site. |
